Jutta Koether
Jutta Koether (* 1958 in Cologne ) is a German painter , performance artist , musician , writer, critic and theorist who works and lives in New York and Berlin .
life and work
Koether studied art education from 1977 to 1981 at the University of Cologne . She was an editor and (from 1985) co-editor of the music and pop culture magazine Spex and is a reviewer and contributor to numerous magazines, for example, from Texte zur Kunst , FlashArt and ArtScribe .
The role of Jutta Koether has often been interpreted as a feminist response to the Cologne scene in the late 1980s.
Koether's work spans a wide variety of activities including painting, performance, film, and music; She also regards her political and journalistic activities as part of her artistic practice: She describes herself as a "painter, performer, participant" and often works in joint projects with other artists, e.g. B. with the Sonic Youth musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore as well as with Steven Parrino and Ei Arakawa .
Koether is also a lecturer and has lectured at the University of Fine Arts , Hamburg , the School of Visual Arts , New York, the University of the Arts , Berlin, at Bard College , New York and at the Cooper Union , New York. She lived and worked in Cologne and since the 1990s in New York.
Since 2010 she has been a professor for painting / drawing at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts .
