The Sonsbeek , a contemporary art exhibition in Arnhem , was curated by Ruangrupa in 2016. In February 2019, the collective was announced as artistic director of documenta 15 in Kassel in 2022.

The eight-person selection committee justified the unanimous vote: “We appoint ruangrupa because they are demonstrably able to address diverse target groups - including those that go beyond a pure art audience - and to challenge local engagement and participation. Her curatorial approach is based on an international network of local community-based art organizations. We are excited to see how ruangrupa will develop a specific project for and from Kassel. At a time when innovative strength comes from independent, collaborative organizations in particular, it seems logical to offer this collective approach a platform with documenta. "
