Adelheid of Thuringia (Abbess)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adelheid von Thuringia (* in the 1st half of the 12th century , † in the 2nd half of the 12th century) came from the noble Ludowinger family . She was the first abbess of the former Nikolaikloster in Eisenach .

Life

Adelheid was a daughter of Landgrave Ludwig I of Thuringia († 1140) and his wife Hedwig von Gudensberg (1098–1148). She was the sixth of the couple's seven children. Your year and place of birth have not been recorded; however, the period of their birth can be narrowed down to the decade between 1130 and 1140.

She first lived as a nun in Drübeck Monastery , a Benedictine monastery in Ilsenburg (Harz) on the northern edge of the Harz in Saxony-Anhalt , and later on the Bonnrode monastery near Sondershausen .

The sources vary about when the monastery was founded: The information varies from 1150 to the end of the 12th century. One source says that her nephew, Landgrave Ludwig III. , entrusted them with the construction of the Nikolaikloster. Other sources name her as the founder of the monastery, who purchased the property from her own resources and commissioned the construction of the monastery. It is undisputed that Adelheid was the first abbess of the Nikolaikloster.

Associated with the founding of the monastery was a representative reconstruction of the neighboring older Nikolaikirche, in which, as can be proven from architectural details, experts from the landgrave's building works were also involved. In the period that followed, the Nikolaikloster became a favored place as a widow's residence. In addition to its pastoral and cultural significance for the city of Eisenach, it also served the education and care of unmarried noble daughters.
