Adelheid, Princess of Schaumburg-Lippe (full name: Friederike Adelheid Marie Luise Hilda Eugenie) (born  September 22, 1875 in Ratibořice Castle , Bohemia ; † January 27, 1971 in Ballenstedt , GDR ) was a member of the Schaumburg-Lippe family and of 1908 to 1918 the last Duchess of Saxony-Altenburg .

Life

Princess Adelheid was a daughter of Prince Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe (1834-1906), the youngest son of Prince Georg Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe , and Princess Bathildis of Anhalt-Dessau (1837-1902).

She grew up with four brothers and three sisters in the princely rule of Nachod in Eastern Bohemia. On February 17, 1898, Princess Adelheid married Prince Ernst von Sachsen-Altenburg, who ascended the throne as Duke Ernst II in 1908 . The wedding took place in Bückeburg , the residence of her cousin, Prince Georg zu Schaumburg-Lippe , whose wife Marie Anna was the groom's sister. After the marriage, the young couple initially settled in a stately villa in Potsdam . All four of the couple's children were born there between 1899 and 1905. She died on January 27, 1971 at the age of 95 in Ballenstedt in the GDR , a good 15 years after her former husband Ernst II, who was the only former German prince who also stayed in the GDR and became a citizen.
