Location and characteristics

Ader Doutchi Maggia is located in the south of the Tahoua region in Niger and includes the Ader Doutchi plateau in the Ader landscape and the Maggia valley up to the state border with Nigeria . In the east, the zone borders directly on the agro-ecological zone of the Tarka Valley .

In the southern part of Ader Doutchi Maggia, irrigation farming is practiced. Corn, sorghum , (tuber) vegetables and above all onions are grown, the sale of which is an important source of income. The region was hit by a long dry spell that began in the mid-1960s and peaked in 1984. The consequences were accelerated soil degradation and desertification .

Development projects

In particular to counteract soil degradation and the associated migration movements and land use conflicts, there were several large-scale development projects in Ader Doutchi Maggia from the 1960s:

  • The development project Projet de développement rural intégré de l'Ader Doutchi Maggia began in 1967 and was financed by the French state development aid fund, Fonds d'Aide et Coopération (FAC). Modern agricultural techniques should be introduced and reforestation carried out in the main valley of the Maggia. The project was based on the unpaid participation of the local population and was discontinued in 1972 due to insufficient success.
  • With the Badaguichiri project, paid for from the European Development Fund , there was a follow-up project with similar goals, which focused on a smaller area, the valley of Kaoura Abdou in Badaguichiri , and also relied on paid workers. It was handled in two phases (1976–1980, 1980–1984). Sustainable agricultural training for the local population failed.
  • Italy financed the development project Projet de développement rural intégré de Keita implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations . It took place in two phases (1984–1991, 1991–1996) in the department of Keita and included measures to increase agricultural production, to restore and preserve soil and water resources, and to strengthen rural institutions on the with high participation of the population Level of villages. A disadvantage of this project was the high cost.
