The Maggia (also: Majia , Majiya , Majjia , Majya and Maya ) is a dry valley in Niger and Nigeria .

The dry valley runs roughly from the northeast in the Tahoua region in Niger to the southwest in the state of Sokoto in Nigeria. It only carries water intermittently, depending on the amount of precipitation in the rainy season. In Niger, it is part of the Ader Doutchi Maggia agro-ecological zone .

The Maggia has its origin southeast of the Ader Doutchi plateau in the municipality of Déoulé . It initially runs parallel to the lower Tarka Valley to the east and passes the villages of Garadoumé , Kélémé , Gounfara and Kawara . The main valley is characterized by swampy alluvial soil with shrub vegetation. In the upper reaches, it is fed by numerous steep side valleys that cut into a slightly undulating sandstone plateau. There are dams on several of these side valleys: the Garadoumé dam , the Tounfafi dam , the Guidan Magagi dam , the Kawara dam , the Mouléla dam and the Guidan Kodidi dam . In the upper Maggia Valley, from 1975 to 1984 a large-scale development project financed by CARE was used to create landscape- defining wind protection strips as a measure against soil erosion .

After the village of Doguérawa, the Maggia crosses the national road 1 and comes to the village of Malbaza . It is then dammed up to form large reservoirs with the Mozagué Dam and the Zongo Dam . After the village of Tsernaoua, it reaches the town of Birni-N'Konni . Behind Birni-N'Konni and the state border with Nigeria, the dry valley widens into a succession of swamps and feeds Lake Kalmalo near the city of Illela . The Maggia passes the city of Gwadabawa until it finally flows into the Rima at the city of Kware , a tributary of the Sokoto , which in turn flows into the Niger River.
