Malbaza is a rural municipality and the capital of the Malbaza department of the same name in Niger .

Malbaza is located at the transition from the Sudan to the Sahel zone . The neighboring communities are Tajaé in the northwest, Badaguichiri in the northeast, Doguérawa in the east, Tsernaoua in the south and Alléla in the west. The municipality is divided into 37 administrative villages, three traditional villages, 78 hamlets and two camps. The main town of the rural community is the village of Malbaza. The largest villages in the municipality by population include Guidan Ider and Tchouroutt . The dry valley Maggia runs through the rural community .

history

The rural community of Malbaza emerged as an administrative unit in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the western part of the canton of Doguérawa. Since 2011, the rural community no longer belongs to the Birni-N'Konni department , but to the newly created Malbaza department. After a meningitis epidemic in 2015 with 358 deaths nationwide, thousands of people were vaccinated against the disease in the following year, with Malbaza being one of the centers of action of the Ministry of Health with almost 13,000 vaccinations, along with Gounfara , Koutoukalé and Niamey .

At the 2001 census, Malbaza had 74,076 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 114,432.

politics

In the local elections in July 2004, Assoumane Hamani ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor. On April 15, 2010, the Council of Ministers appointed Abatcha Mai Manga as Administrator ( Administrateur Délégué ) of the municipality and Omar Diamballa as Head of the Administrative Post ( Chef de poste administratif ) of Malbaza.

Culture and sights

Great Mosque of Salewa (2019)

The Salewa Grand Mosque is a Friday mosque built in 1989 in the village of Salewa in the municipality of Malbaza. The architect of the building was Falké Barmou , who died in 2002 and was an autodidact. The builder was Elhadj Habou, with whom Falké Barmou also worked on other construction projects. The Great Mosque of Salewa is next to the Great Mosque of Yama in Badaguichiri one of two mosques in 2006, the UNESCO proposal Nigerien Ministry of Culture, the mosques in the territory of the region submitted Tahoua in the list of World Heritage take, be named.

Economy and Infrastructure

There is an important cement plant in the rural community: the Société Nigérienne de Cimenterie (SNC) was founded in 1963 and privatized in 1998. There is a cattle market in the village of Guidan Ider. The market day is Tuesday. National Road 1 runs through Malbaza and is part of the international Dakar-N'Djamena Highway . The community is located in the narrow zone along the border with Nigeria , which extends from Tounouga in the west to Malawa in the east and is used in irrigation farming for cash crops .
