Tajaé (also: Tajayé ) is a rural community in the Illéla department in Niger .

geography

Tajaé is located in the Sahel zone . The rainy season lasts three to four months and peaks in August and early September. The amount of precipitation can vary greatly from year to year. From November to February it is dry and cold, from March to May dry and hot. Then the temperature can approach 45 ° C. In Tajaé there are several dry valleys ( koris ) and temporary ponds ( mares ), which form an important basis for agricultural use. The vegetation is characterized by tree steppes with Arabian gum acacias , Piliostigma reticulatum , Seyal acacias and desert dates , bush steppes with Guiera senegalensis , Kinkéliba and sand mallows, and herbaceous steppes with Andropogon gayanus , Aristida mutabilis and Cenchrus biflorus . It is disappearing due to people, animals and climatic imponderables. The animal world of Tajaé, which is typical of rodents, reptiles and migratory birds, is also affected.

The neighboring communities are Illéla in the northwest, Badaguichiri in the northeast, Malbaza in the southeast and Alléla in the southwest. The municipality is divided into 18 administrative villages, seven traditional villages and 33 hamlets. The main town of the rural community is Tajaé, consisting of the administrative villages of Tajaé Sédentaire and Tajaé Nomade.

history

The settlement of the municipality was carried out by Hausa and Tuareg , who moved from Agadez . The Hausa farmers founded several villages. The Tuareg lived transhumant at first before they settled in their own settlements.

The rural community of Tajaé emerged from part of the canton of Illéla / Tajaé in 2002 as part of a state-wide administrative reform. In the flood disaster in West and Central Africa in 2010 , 6,468 residents of Tajaé were classified as disaster victims.

population

At the 2001 census, Tajaé had 38,432 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 78,916. The ethnic groups Hausa, Tuareg and Fulbe live in the community .

politics

In the local elections in July 2004, Ibro Handjar ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor. The municipal council has eleven members.

Culture and sights

The mosque of Tajaé Sédentaire was built according to plans by the architect Falké Barmou , who built the Great Mosque of Yama .

The community lies at the transition from the zone of rain-fed farming in the north to the zone of irrigated farming in the south. The food base is created through our own agriculture and animal husbandry. Millet is the main food, followed by sorghum and cowpeas . The products from livestock are mainly exported. Agriculture suffers from desertification , irregular rainfall, soil poverty and insufficient technical equipment. In addition, there are conflicts between arable farmers and ranchers over land use.

Trade is also of economic importance. There are five weekly markets in Tajaé. In addition to supplying the population with food and everyday products, the weekly markets serve to export goods such as cattle, leather, animal skins and onions to neighboring Nigeria . Handicraft professions are mainly carried out by women in Tajaé.

The asphalt national road 29 , which connects Tajaé with the cities of Birni-N'Konni and Tahoua , runs through the rural community . The remaining slopes through the bushland are in poor condition.
