Birni-N'Konni (short form: Konni ) is a municipality and the capital of the Birni-N'Konni department in Niger .

geography

Birni-N'Konni is located in the south of the country on the border with Nigeria , in the large Sudan landscape at its transition to the Sahel zone . The neighboring communities in Niger are Tsernaoua in the north and Bazaga in the west. The old town (the "ancien noyau") is bordered in the east by the seasonal water-bearing Maggia river . The municipality is divided into eight districts and a rural area with 38 villages and nine hamlets. The neighborhoods are called Fada, Matan Karawa, Moun Wadata, Moun Wadata II, Rini, Roumdji, Sabon Gari and Tagagia. The larger rural villages include Dossey and Massalata .

history

Konni in Stieler's Hand Atlas (1891)

The region of Birni-N'Konni initially formed a relatively autonomous area under the suzerainty of Kebbi and was conquered by Gobir around 1750 . It reached from Baizo (today a village in the municipality of Alléla ) in the west to Doguérawa in the east and expanded north to Ader . In 1823 their main town was fortified, birni auf Hausa , in order to be protected against the Fulbe jihad proclaimed by Usman dan Fodio in 1804 . Since then the city has been called Birni-N'Konni, translated as "fortification of the Kanni". The Kanni were the ancient ruling dynasty of Kebbi. Birni N'Konni decided not to wage a hopeless war against Usman dan Fodio and submitted to his rule. The city was incorporated into Usman dan Fodios Caliphate of Sokoto and its inhabitants Islamized .

In 1899, Birni-N'Konni was the scene of a notorious massacre. In the course of the occupation of French West Africa , the French officers Paul Voulet and Julien Chanoine of the Voulet-Chanoine Mission were refused to hand over six young oxen, whereupon they gave the order to destroy the city and kill the then 10,000 inhabitants. A Franco- British agreement initially struck Birni-N'Konni with British Nigeria. By another border agreement of April 8, 1904, the city came to French West Africa. Thereby she finally broke away from the rule of Sokoto.

Until 1972, only the major cities of Niamey , Maradi , Tahoua and Zinder had the status of an independent municipality in Niger . This year, Birni-N'Konni was raised to a parish at the same time as six other Nigerien towns.

population

At the 2012 census, the borough had 149,414 inhabitants in 23,529 households. Of these, 63,169 people lived in the urban and 86,245 people in the rural municipal area. The largest ethnic group in Birni-N'Konni are the Hausa .

Moussa Ladan ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor in the local elections in July 2004 . On April 15, 2010, the Council of Ministers Boubacar Goubé Illisassou appointed Administrator ( Administrateur Délégué ) of the municipality.

Culture and sights

In the winding old town are the old Great Mosque and the chefferie , the seat of the sarki , the traditional head of the city. There are gardens along the Maggia. Another large garden area is Tchilankom between the Sabon Gari and Moun Wadata districts.

The local Maison des jeunes et de la culture is Maison Kondo . Occasional tournaments of the lutte traditionnelle , a popular martial art, and concerts take place here. In the village of Massalata, part of Birni-N'Konni, a large gathering of the Azna is held every year in January or February .

Due to the favorable traffic situation, Birni-N'Konni is an important trading center. The main street that runs from Carrefour de l'Unité along the old town towards the Nigerian border is a lively and busy commercial street. The market square, which is open every day, is located on the main street and is visited by a large number of ethnic groups, especially on Wednesday, market day - besides Hausa, among others, the Fulbe , Tuareg and Zarma . The city is located in that narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, which extends from Tounouga in the west to Malawa in the east and is used in the irrigation field economy for cash crops .

Birni-N'Konni is an important traffic junction. The city is located on the Dakar-N'Djamena Highway and is served by all four major bus companies in the country. There is a large black market at the bus station.

Birni-N'Konni is the seat of a Tribunal de Grande Instance, one of the ten civil courts of first instance nationwide . With the Center Kan Kowa Shi Waye , the Catholic Mission runs an educational center that promotes the literacy of adults in French and Hausa in particular . A library is attached to the center.
