Adetokunbo Adegboyega Ademola

Sir Adetokunbo Adegboyega Ademola (born February 1, 1906 in Abeokuta , Nigeria , † January 29, 1993 in Lagos ) was a Nigerian lawyer and judge. He was the first Nigerian-born President of the Supreme Court from 1958 to 1972 and co-founded the law school in Nigeria.

Sir Adetokunbo Adegboyega Ademola was a son of Sir Ladapo Ademola II, King of the Egba . He attended King's College in Lagos and Selwyn College in Cambridge . He studied at Middle Temple in London and was admitted to the bar in 1934. After his return he worked as a lawyer and in the civil service in Nigeria. In 1949 he was appointed to the Supreme Court by the colonial authorities, and in 1955 Chief Justice of the Western Region. He retained his position after Nigeria's independence in 1960.

From 1975 he was Chancellor of the University of Nigeria and from 1978 chairman of the Commonwealth Foundation . In 1957 he was ennobled as a Knight Bachelor , in 1963 appointed Privy Counselor and accepted into the Order of the British Empire as Knight Commander .
