Admiral Freebee (* 1974 in Antwerp as Tom Van Laere ) is a Belgian singer-songwriter . He plays guitar, piano and harmonica. With his first four albums, he was number one in the Belgian charts .

Surname

Admiral Freebee is the name of a sunken in the San Francisco Bay ship passing through the novel " On the Road " - the way of Jack Kerouac became known. Van Laere adapted this name as his pseudonym under which he performs and publishes records. The booklets of his CDs mention his real name as a musician and songwriter, Tom Van Laere .

biography

Van Laere comes from Brasschaat , a municipality in the greater Antwerp area. He started his career as a tennis player. One day when he was posing in front of the mirror, he turned the bat, shouted “guitar” and now devoted himself to the work of Bob Dylan , Neil Young and Hank Williams . As Admiral Freebee, he took part in Humo's Rock Rally in 2000 , a biennial competition for young talent in Belgium. There he won the jury's silver medal and the audience award. He got a recording deal with Universal and in 2003 released his first album, Admiral Freebee , which topped the Flemish part of the Belgian charts for a week . The song's titled sequel was released in 2005 and was number one for two weeks. His third album called Wild Dreams of New Beginnings followed in 2006 and was also on the top position for two weeks. The recordings took place in Kingston, New York and Nashville, Tennessee, among others. The piece Coming of the Knight is a duet with the American country singer Emmylou Harris . Since July 2008 the "bearded bard (from Brasschaat)" has been working on the recordings of his fourth LP.
