Adolf Baumgarten
Adolf Baumgarten (born May 3, 1915 in Hamburg , † October 2, 1942 near Newel , Soviet Union ) was a German boxer .
Career
Adolf Baumgarten grew up in Hamburg and started boxing there as a teenager at SC "Heros" Hamburg . He developed quickly and from 1936 belonged to the elite of German amateur boxers. In 1936 he became German middleweight champion and defeated Loibl from Ulm in the final. He represented Germany at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin in the middleweight division . He came there to point wins over Alfred Fleury, Switzerland and Benito Totti, Italy, but lost in the quarterfinals against Henry Tiller from Norway. He finished 5th.
In 1937 Alfred Baumgarten was again German middleweight champion. In the final, he defeated the experienced Erich Campe from Berlin on points. At the European Championships in Milan in 1937, he played only one fight in the middleweight division. He lost in the quarterfinals against Gerhardus Dekkers from the Netherlands on points and thus again finished 5th.
In 1938 he was again German middleweight champion. As in 1937, he defeated Erich Campe on points in the final. On April 29, 1938, a selection tournament for a European team was held in Berlin, which should start in the United States. Adolf Baumgarten defeated Bruno Zorzone from Italy in the middleweight division on points. The comparative fights between the USA and Europe took place on May 18, 1938 in Chicago and on May 24, 1938 in Minneapolis . In Chicago, Adolf Baumgarten lost to Booker Beckwith by points, while he came to a knockout victory over Petrie in Minneapolis.
At the German championship in 1939, Adolf Baumgarten surprisingly had to admit defeat to the only seventeen year old Rudi Pepper from Dortmund. He was also eliminated early at the European Championships in Dublin in 1939. He lost on points in the round of 16 against Viljo Suhonen from Finland.
At the German championship in 1940, Adolf Baumgarten lost again in the middleweight finals against Rudi Pepper on points. The 1940 Olympic Games in Tokyo were canceled because of the Second World War.
In 1941 Adolf Baumgarten became German champion again. In the light heavyweight division, he defeated Herbert Kleinwächter from Berlin on points.
In 1942 European championships were held in Breslau , but not all European boxing associations were able to take part because of the Second World War. In order to achieve a corresponding number of participants, the participating nations were able to register two participants in each weight class. Germany was represented in the middleweight division by Adolf Baumgarten and Carl Schmidt . Adolf Baumgarten came to a point victory over Ferrucio Pellegrini, Italy, then won over Rudolf Szalay, Hungary by knockout in the 3rd round and defeated Allan Granelli from Sweden on points. In the final he lost to Karl Gustaf Norén from Sweden on points. After the Second World War, the AIBA withdrew the status of an official European championship from these European championships.
From June 7th to June 8th, 1942, an international boxing tournament took place in Rome, in which Adolf Baumgarten also took part. He won this tournament in his weight class with victories over Bertolo, Italy and Jaszai, Hungary. Immediately afterwards he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and died on October 2, 1942 on the Eastern Front near Newel.
