Erich Campe started boxing at the Teutonia Berlin club when he was 13.

In 1932 Campe was the first German welterweight champion in Munich . With this success he qualified for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles that year . Here the only 20-year-old Campe surprisingly fought his way into the final after victories over the Japanese Aikoku Hirabayashi, the Dane Carl Jensen and the Finn Bruno Ahlberg . In 1936 Campe was able to win the German championship against Murach. At an international tournament in Berlin in 1937, Campe, now starting in the middleweight division (up to 75 kg), beat the French Jean Despeaux before losing to Adolf Baumgarten in the semi-finals . He was also defeated by Baumgarten in the final of the German Championships in 1938.

Five fights ended in a draw. He succumbed u. a. Gustav Eder and Dieter Hucks in battles for the German championship title in light heavyweight (up to 81 kg), as well as Conny Rux and Hans Stretz each on points.
