Adolf M. Birch
Adolf Matthias Birke (born October 12, 1939 in Wellingholzhausen ) is a historian and professor emeritus for modern and contemporary history at the University of Munich .
Life
Birke studied history, political science and philosophy in Berlin and Cambridge . In 1968 he received his doctorate in Berlin on Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler and German liberalism. The habilitation followed in 1976.
Birke was initially a private lecturer and from the winter semester 1978/79 professor at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute of the Free University of Berlin . From 1982 to 1985 he held a professorship for modern history at the University of Bayreuth . From August 1985 to August 1994 he was director of the German Historical Institute in London . After his return from London he taught at the University of Munich until his retirement in 2000.
Birke is a member of the Royal Historical Society and a corresponding member of the Berlin Scientific Society. From 1982 to 1995 he was President of the Prince Albert Society .
