Adolf Boerner

Adolf Boerner (born November 3, 1870 in Hamburg ; † July 17, 1930 ibid) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Adolf Boerner, the son of the sculptor Carl Boerner and grandson of the painter Carl Gustav Boerner , attended the Johanneum high school in Hamburg from the spring of 1880 . At the suggestion of his teachers, he studied classical philology and history at the University of Göttingen after graduating (Easter 1889) , where he was particularly supported by Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff , Friedrich Leo and Hermann Sauppe . He spent the summer semester of 1890 and the winter semester of 1890/1891 at the Berlin University and attended lectures and exercises with the philologists Hermann Diels and Johannes Vahlen , with the historians Ulrich Köhler and Otto Hirschfeld, and with the archaeologist Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz .

After his return, Boerner was part of the proseminar in Göttingen for two semesters, then the philological seminar for three semesters. In 1894 he was with Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff with a dissertation on Greek history from 410 to 403 BC. . Chr doctorate . The Rigorosum took place on March 7, 1894.

After the teacher training exam and the probationary year, Boerner was employed as a senior teacher at the Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hamburg at Easter 1898 . He worked here for several decades. In 1923 he was appointed headmaster. For health reasons he retired at Easter 1926. He died four years later at the age of 59.

As a recognized specialist in the history of the Peloponnesian War , Boerner wrote not only his dissertation but also various articles for the Realencyclopedia of Classical Antiquity , which was published by Georg Wissowa .
