Adolph Friedrich Trendelenburg

Adolph Friedrich Trendelenburg (born May 25, 1737 in Neustrelitz ; † August 18, 1803 in Kiel ) was a German lawyer, three-time rector of the University of Bützow and Count of the Palatinate .

Life and work

Adolph Friedrich Trendelenburg was born as one of 16 children of the court preacher and superintendent of the Stargard parish, Theodor Trendelenburg (1696–1765), and his wife Magdalena Elisabeth, nee. Oertling (1705–1796) born. He attended the Katharineum in Lübeck and, after successfully completing his degree, enrolled at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . Here Trendelenburg became a member of the German Society and in 1760 also received his doctorate in jurisprudence . A year later, in 1761, a second doctorate followed immediately. phil., who was then appointed to an extraordinary professorship at the University of Helmstedt . In 1762 Trendelenburg went to Bützow and taught law there. In 1768 he was granted the dignity of Hofpfalzgraf , which enabled him, among other things, to appoint notaries and legitimize illegitimate children.

In 1765 Trendelenburg was appointed rector of the University of Bützow for the first time , followed by two further terms in 1769 and 1772/73. In 1774, after a stay in Wismar , Trendelenburg was appointed assessor at the Swedish Upper Tribunal . In 1783 he accepted the call to the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel , where he remained full professor of law until his death in 1803 .

Already in his school and student days he wrote numerous congratulatory and occasional letters.
