Adolf Hamm (organist)
Adolf Hamm (born March 9, 1882 in Wickersheim ( Lower Alsace ), † October 15, 1938 in Basel ) was a German organist .
After initial university studies and organ training with Ernst Münch in Strasbourg , Hamm moved to Leipzig in 1904 , where he deepened his organ playing with Karl Straube . In 1906 he was appointed organist at the Basel Minster and head of the organ class at the Basel Conservatory . In 1911 he founded the Basler Bach Choir , which he directed until 1922 and from 1926 until his death. Hamm was also significantly involved in the development of the Basel Knabenkantorei when he supported Hermann Ulbrich , the choir founder of the Singknaben at that time , in advertising campaigns in 1928 and had the young choir perform twice with the Bach Choir. As an organ virtuoso, he was a regular guest in numerous Swiss and German cities. His organ and choir concerts were characterized by the special care given to the work of Johann Sebastian Bach , but were also open to contemporary music.
