Adolf Hirémy-Hirschl
Adolf Hirémy-Hirschl (born January 31, 1860 in Timisoara , Austrian Empire , † 1933 in Rome , Kingdom of Italy ; actually Adolf Hirschl ) was an Austrian painter.
Life
Adolf Hirschl was of Jewish origin. He came to Vienna as a child , where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1874 to 1882 . With a scholarship of 3000 crowns he traveled through Egypt and visited Rome for the first time (1882-1884). Hirschl received numerous prizes at exhibitions in Vienna, including the Kaiser Prize in 1891 and the Great Golden State Medal in 1898 . In 1901 he received a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition . In the 90s he had an affair with a married lady of Viennese society, Isabella Henriette Victoria Ruston, married Schön, which caused quite a stir. The affair ended with her divorce in 1898 and subsequent marriage to Hirschl. The couple had a daughter together, Maud. Annoyed by the scandal over Viennese society, Hirschl resumed his Hungarian citizenship and changed his name to Hirémy-Hirschl in 1899. He left Vienna and settled in Rome, where he took part in the exhibitions of the Amatori e Cultori di Belle Arti from 1904 to 1908 .
power
Hirémy-Hirschl was a history painter . He was friends with Klimt before founding the Secession. In contrast to this, however, he persisted in an academic painting style. His subjects were often large-format history pictures a la Karl von Piloty from ancient mythology and history, such as Hannibal's March over the Alps , the invasion of the Vandals in Rome or the plague in Rome , with which he had great success at the turn of the century. In Rome he also painted Mediterranean landscapes and portraits.
