Adolf Mathis

Adolf Mathis (born May 22, 1938 in Oberrickenbach ) is a former Swiss ski racer .

Life

Adolf “Dölf” Mathis grew up as the eldest son with six siblings on the Fell property. He attended school in his home village. At the age of 15, Mathis won the slalom at the Nidwalden association race.

In August 1964, Adolf Mathis was elected ranger for the canton of Nidwalden.

Ski career

As a 17-year-old, he achieved success in his first international competition: At the International FIS Junior Race in Innsbruck in 1955 , he secured the first places in slalom and in the combination against strong competition, including Karl Schranz . He then won the slalom and giant slalom at the Swiss Junior Championships in Gstaad in 1956 .

In 1958 he was sixth in slalom at the World Championships in Bad Gastein .

In 1959 Mathis took the slalom title from Georges Schneider at the Swiss Championships in Engelberg , which he then defended six times in a row until 1964. In 1960 and 1964 he was nominated by the national association for the Olympic Games in Squaw Valley and Innsbruck . In Squaw Valley 1960 he was 15th in slalom. In Innsbruck 1964 Mathis was one of the favorites. In the first slalom run, he fought for fifth place. After the second run, he finished sixth and won an Olympic diploma.

In 1961 he finished second behind Pepi Stiegler at the Lauberhorn Slalom in the Bernese Oberland. A year later he won this race. In 1963 he reached third place at the slalom in Kitzbühel .

In 1973 he became Swiss champion in the military three-way battle (shooting, giant slalom and cross-country skiing).
