Adolph Johann Schmidt (born December 6, 1806 in Frankfurt am Main ; † December 8, 1889 ibid) was a German malacologist and doctor .

Life

education and profession

Adolf Schmidt, son of a wealthy businessman , devoted himself to studying medicine at the Albertus University in Königsberg from 1826 after obtaining his university entrance qualification , and in the following year he moved to the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg . After taking part in political campaigns there, he was excluded from studying, but was able to continue at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg after the intervention of influential personalities . 1830 took place there his doctorate to Dr. med.

Adolf Schmidt subsequently traveled to France and England until he set up as a general practitioner in his native Frankfurt am Main in 1831 . In 1834, the socially committed and like-minded colleagues were involved in the establishment of the city hospital for the poor. In the medical field, Schmidt made particular contributions to the use of the Dr. Hermann Brehmer in the Silesian town of Görbersdorf developed and initially controversial treatment for pulmonary consumption , the success of which was later recognized by the critics.

Scientific research

Adolf Schmidt, who was interested in the natural sciences, especially malacology, joined the Senckenberg Society for Natural Research in 1832 and set up the mollusc section at the Senckenberg Natural History Museum . Schmidt was also a co-founder of the Medical Association in Frankfurt in 1845 and of the Microscopic Association in 1855, of which he was director until 1875.

His special focus was on the human intestinal worms, where he made a name for himself through his contribution to the discovery of the tapeworm Taenia mediocanellata . In addition, Adolf Schmidt was the first to prove the carrier of the Finn of the new tapeworm in cattle.
