Adolf Zschunke (born July 14, 1937 in Leipzig ) is a German chemist who is one of the pioneers in the application of NMR spectroscopy for structure elucidation in Germany.

Life

Adolf Zschunke studied chemistry from 1957 to 1962 at the University of Leipzig , where in 1962 he wrote a diploma thesis on the subject of "Synthesis and spectroscopic investigations of Schiff bases of some azulenes" with W. Treibs.

From 1962 to 1971 he taught and researched as an assistant at the Institute for Physics at the University of Leipzig, where in 1971 he worked with M. Mühlstädt and A. Lösche with a thesis on the Mannich reaction for Dr. rer. nat. PhD. From 1971 Zschunke was a university lecturer at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

In 1976 he obtained his habilitation (at the time Dr. sc. Nat.) At the University of Leipzig with a thesis on NMR spectroscopy. In 1975 he became head of the working group for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy at the MLU Halle , in 1984 he was appointed professor for analytical chemistry at the Humboldt University in Berlin, in 1992 he was reappointed professor for analytical and environmental chemistry at the HU Berlin . Zschunke was also Vice-Rector at HU and, after Heinrich Fink had resigned, he was the University's Rector from late 1991 until the first presidential election in July 1992.

From 1994 he was head of the department for analytical chemistry and reference materials at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and “S professor” at Humboldt University. In 2002 Zschunke retired.
