Adolfo John Canepa , OBE , CMG , GMH (born December 17, 1940 in London ) is a politician from Gibraltar who was briefly Chief Minister of Gibraltar between 1987 and 1988 . From 2012 to 2019 he was Speaker of the Parliament (Parliament of Gibraltar)

Life

Canepa was a candidate of the Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights (AACR) in the elections of 23 June 1972 with the second-best overall result for the first time a member of the assembly house of Gibraltar (Gibraltar House of Assembly) elected and in the elections on September 29, 1976 , February 6, 1980, January 26, 1984 and re-elected on March 24, 1988, so that he initially belonged to the House of Assembly until January 16, 1992.

On 26 June 1972 he was of Chief Minister Joshua Hassan Minister of Labor and Social Security (Minister for Labor and Social Security) appointed to his second Cabinet. At the same time he held the post of mayor of Gibraltar for the first time as the successor to Alfred J. Vasquez between 1976 and his replacement by Horace J. Zammit in 1978 . He held the post of Minister for Labor and Social Security from October 6, 1976 to February 28, 1980 in Hassan's third cabinet and was subsequently Minister for Economic Development, Trade and Labor from February 28, 1980 to February 1, 1984 and Social Security (Minister for Economic Development, Trade & Labor and Social Security) in Hassan's fourth cabinet. On February 1, 1984 he took over the post of Minister for Economic Development and Trade in the fifth Hassan cabinet .

After Hassan had resigned for personal reasons on December 8, 1987 after the signing of an agreement between the United Kingdom and Spain on the joint use of Gibraltar airport , Adolfo Canepa took over the office of Chief Minister of Gibraltar on December 8, 1987 . In the elections of March 24, 1988, the Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights suffered a defeat and only received seven of the 15 seats in parliament. Thereupon the previous opposition leader Joe Bossano of the Gibraltar Socialist Labor Party (GSLP) became the new chief minister on March 25, 1988, while Canepa was the new leader of the opposition (Leader of the Opposition) .

After Haresh Budhrani had resigned on September 28, 2012, Canepa was elected by the members of the House of Assembly as the new Speaker of Parliament on October 28, 2012 and will hold this office until 2019. On April 2, 2014, he succeeded Anthony Lima once again assumed the office of Mayor of Gibraltar and held this until April 4, 2017, after which Kaiane Aldorino , the former Miss Gibraltar and Miss World 2009 , succeeded him on April 5, 2017. For his services he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and the Gibraltar Medallion of Honor (GMH).
