Sir Robert Peliza

Sir Robert John Peliza , KBE , GMH , ED (born November 16, 1920 in Gibraltar ; † December 12, 2011 ibid) was a politician from Gibraltar who was Chief Minister of Gibraltar between 1969 and 1972 .

Life

Peliza was originally an officer and finally a major . For his military services he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and the Efficiency Decoration (ED). He was initially a member of the Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights (AACR) and founded the Integration with Britain Party (IWBP) in 1967 . This won in elections to the meeting house of Gibraltar (Gibraltar House of Assembly) , five of the 15 seats on 30 July 1969, formed together with the three-member Isola Group of Peter Isola on 6 August 1969, the coalition government . Peliza then replaced Joshua Abraham Hassan as Chief Minister of Gibraltar , while Peter Isola became Deputy Chief Minister.

In the early elections that followed in 1972, the IWBP gained two seats and now had seven seats. However, this already included two mandates from the now dissolved Isola Group . The AACR in turn won eight seats and was thus again the strongest party. On June 25, 1972, Joshua Abraham Hassan took over as the successor of Peliza again as Chief Minister. He was then opposition leader , but handed over the offices as chairman of the IWBP and opposition leader in October 1972 to Maurice Xiberras .

Peliza herself was re-elected to the House of Assembly in the elections on September 29, 1976 and February 6, 1980 . In the elections on January 26, 1984, however, he suffered an electoral defeat and, like Peter Isola, resigned from the meeting house. After he had not run in the elections of March 24, 1988, he was elected in 1989 to succeed Alfred J. Vasquez by the members of the House of Assembly as the new Speaker of Parliament and held this office until 1996, after which John Alcantara was his successor started.

On December 31, 1997, Periza, who was also awarded the Gibraltar Medallion of Honor (GMH), was made Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) and from then on bore the suffix "Sir". He died in St Bernard's Hospital in Gibraltar.
