Adolfo child
Adolf or Adolfo Kind (* 1848 in Chur ; † August 1907 at Piz Bernina ) was a Swiss chemical engineer and one of the fathers of skiing in Italy .
biography
The child came from a Walser family that had lived in Chur for over 400 years . When his father was appointed pastor of the Evangelical Church in Italy, the family went to Milan , but returned to Graubünden when the Sardinian War broke out in 1859 . Then Kind completed a chemistry degree in Munich and Zurich before he went back to Italy in 1879, where he found a job in the management of a candle and soap factory in Mira . Here he founded a family, with whom he moved to Turin in 1890, where he took over and ran a wick factory.
In November 1896 Adolfo Kind had two pairs of skis from the canton of Glarus brought to Turin and aroused great interest in skiing among his friends and acquaintances. The Kinds and their acquaintances became the core of the Italian ski pioneers, were constantly concerned with the development and improvement of ascent and descent techniques in the mountains and inspired more and more fans of this new sport in the area through their role model.
In 1898 Adolfo Kind, his son Paolo Kind and Adolf Hess undertook the first mountain tour on skis in Val Sangone (ITA). The development in the area of high mountain tours with skis was also strongly promoted by Luciano Roiti and Ottorino Mezzalama , who, like Adolfo Kind, were also members of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). And so it came about that the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) founded Italy's first ski club, the Torino Ski Club , towards the end of 1901 at the initiative of Adolfo Kind and Adolf Hess . Two more soon followed in Genoa and Milan . Adolfo Kind was one of the first members and later President of the Club Alpino Accademico Italiano (CAAI), which had been cooperating with the Turin Ski Club since 1904. Only a few years later, the Torino Ski Club built its first ski hut in 1913 at Clot de Sabouiller above Sauze d'Oulx in the Valle di Susa, which was named Capanna Kind in memory of Adolfo Kind .
Adolfo Kind had a tragic accident in 1907 while climbing the Piz Bernina over the Bianco ridge . His son Paolo Kind founded the "Unione Ski Club Italiani" in 1908, which later became part of the FISI .
The Ski Club Torino held the “Trofeo Kind” annually (with a few interruptions) in honor of Adolfo Kind up to his 100th year of death (2007). Furthermore, the route of the first documented ski tour in Italy, which Adolfo Kind and Adolf Hess undertook in December 1898 in Val Sangone, is now called "Pista Adolfo Kind".
