Adolph Stroitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adolph Stroitz († June 28, 1632 or August 6, 1633 , other sources give the year 1634 or 1635) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and the 35th abbot of the Marienstatt Abbey . His abbatiat went from 1623 to 1633.

Live and act

Adolph Stroitz comes from Drolshagen. His year of birth is unknown. He is mentioned as a Marian monk. It is known that he was a subprior prior to his election , but the exact dates are not known. On the eve of his election, he took part in a chapter resolution in the function of subprior. On August 5, 1623, Adolph Stroitz was elected to succeed Philipp Seiler as 35th abbot. When he was elected, the envoys of the Counts von Sayn were not present - an unusual process for the time, which led to irritation. Only one day after the election did the count congratulate the new abbot on his election.

Like his successors, the Abbiat Adolph was dominated by the Thirty Years' War : On August 2, 1625, around 40 soldiers invaded the abbey: they asked for food that the monks could give them. After that, however, the soldiers threatened to take the monks prisoner - they demanded 1,000 Reichstaler . The abbey could not pay this amount, so that the soldiers imprison "the Zellerar, the infirmary and other conventuals". The soldiers then looted the abbey. “Finally, the Cellerar was kidnapped, who was only released eight days later for a ransom of 400 Reichstalers.” The war also endangered the abbey’s economic survival: on January 3, 1627, the abbot was asked to list all the abbey's goods to calculate the war tax.

The abbot was asked by the vicar general of the order to visit the Gnadental monastery . The background to the order was that the abbess had not been canonically elected and did not meet the necessary requirements for being elected abbess. The visitation is documented for July 19, 1628.

There is disagreement in scholarship regarding the date of death: Gilbert Wellstein assumes a date of death on June 28, 1632. Pfeifer, however, mentions August 6, 1633. The Marienstatter Tafeln cites 1634 as the year of death, a copy of 1635. If Wellenstein's date is correct - he gives no source for verification - the abbatiat did not end until 1633. This seems to have been proven.

His successor was Johannes V. Weiler , who was elected on April 28, 1633.
