Adolphe Dumas (born December 18, 1805 in Caumont-sur-Durance , † August 15, 1861 in Dieppe ) was a French poet, playwright and Provençalist .

life and work

Adolphe Dumas, who was born and raised in Provence , had close ties to French Romantic authors in Paris and was a well-known poet and playwright in France around the middle of the 19th century (whose works are now forgotten).

Dumas played a decisive role in the rapid triumph of the epic Mirèio by Frédéric Mistral . On behalf of the Minister of Education, Hippolyte Fortoul , looking for Provencal folk songs, he met Mistral in Maillane on February 5, 1856 , took a look at the manuscript that was in progress and, on August 29, 1858, presented Mistral personally (with the now finished text) in Paris Alphonse de Lamartine , whose 80-page enthusiastic review in the Cours familier de littérature (40e Entretien) ensured immediate success in Paris.

Lamartine identified his friend Adolphe Dumas in the same text (and in contrast to the two Alexandre Dumas, father and son ) as "le Dumas poétique, le Dumas prophétique, le Dumas de la Durance, celui qui jette de temps en temps des cris d ' aigles sur les roches de Provence […], que je respecte à cause de son éternelle inspiration, et que j'aime à cause de sa rigoureuse sincérité. »
