Adriaen van der spelt

Adriaen van der Spelt , also Adriaan or Adrian (born around 1630 in Leiden ; died in November 1673 in Gouda ) was a Dutch glass , flower and portrait painter who worked for some time at the court of the Elector of Brandenburg.

Life

Van der Spelt was born as the son of Gouda glassmaker Job Adriaensz van der Spelt and his wife Saartje Aelbrechtsdr. von Henberch, who married in 1630, were born in Leiden. He was best known as a painter of still lifes in which flowers, fruit or butterflies can be seen. In addition to still lifes, he made winter landscapes and portraits.

He had been a member of the painter's guild in Leiden since 1658, was a student of the glass painter Wouter Crabeth and spent a long time in Gouda in his youth. Here he made a still life together with Frans van Mieris . Van der Spelt created the background image with a flower garland and van Mieris added a light blue curtain in the foreground, with which the flower arrangement could apparently be hidden from view. On April 15, 1661, van der Spelt, then still living in Leiden, married Geertruyt Visschers from Gouda, whose father had died in February of the same year and had left her a considerable fortune. Since Adriaen was not the beneficiary of this inheritance, the couple wrote a will on May 17, 1661 that they mutually identified as sole heirs. A clause stipulated that van der Spelt should pay the von Geertruyt family 2,000 guilders in the event that he survived them. Geertruyt died in July 1662, as did their child in September of that year. The inheritance comprised the house in Gouda as well as the inventory and bonds to the value of 7660 guilders and an annual income of 300 guilders.

His second wife was called Magdalena van Goch, whom he married on June 15, 1664. She too came from a wealthy family and brought three houses into the marriage. Only one month after the wedding she fell ill and died in early September 1664. After her death, van der Spelt received from her mother, Neeltje Sibrantsdr. refunded a legacy of 2000 guilders, which contained some pieces of jewelry and jewels that he had given Magdalena. These originally belonged to his first wife Geertruyt.

Time as court painter and return

Prince Elector Karl Emil of Brandenburg

Van der Spelt's works from the early 1660s show similarities with works by Willem Kalf or Willem van Aelst . Electress Luise Henriette von Brandenburg , who came from the Netherlands, is said to have made him the offer to come to Berlin as court painter. It may have been influenced by his collaboration with Frans van Mieris, who is already known at many European courts. In 1664 van der Spelt came to the court of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg and worked there until 1670. After his arrival in Potsdam, the portrait of Prince Elector Karl Emil was one of his first works. It shows him as a ten-year-old boy in armor, a cloak with ermine fur with a stick in his left hand. This is to underline his future position as ruler. The young prince is surrounded by a garland of lilies, roses, tulips and other flowers. The painting measures 118.5 × 95 cm and is in the exhibition in the museum of the Grunewald hunting lodge .

He then returned to Gouda in 1671. Here he married Cornelia Frolix from Groningen. Ignatius Walvis wrote in 1714 that van der Spelt's third wife is said to have driven him to death: "[...] een Groeningsch quaadaardig wijf, die sijn leevenslamp [...] in 't jaar 1673 uitbloes" (German: "[...] a malicious one Woman from Groningen, who blew out the light of his life in 1673 ”) Elsewhere it says“ […] At last he returned to Gouda and hyrathete a Xantippe, which not only deprived him of the pleasure of his activities, but also of so much annoyance made that he died in the best bloom of his years 1673. "

Mainly still lifes by van der Spelt are known.
