The growth of this settlement ended when the Missouri Pacific Railroad line was built through the area. The terrain in the direction of the place was too steep for this project and therefore a new place was created about three miles south in 1880. For this purpose, a town company bought 80 acres of land and named the place Adrian after the son of an inspector of the railway company. The land was resold to prospective customers and residential and commercial buildings were built. In 1883 the place had 350 inhabitants. The first school in town was built in 1892.
