Adrian Hermann

Adrian Rüdiger Nikolaj Hermann (born December 4, 1981 in Starnberg ) is a German religious scholar .

Life

After graduating from Munich's Maximiliansgymnasium , he studied theater studies , religious studies and American literary history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich ( Magister Artium) from 2002 to 2006 . From 2006 to 2009 he was a doctoral candidate and scholarship holder in the DFG graduate college "World Society - For the Production and Representation of Globality" at Bielefeld University . From 2008 to 2011 he was an associated doctoral candidate in the Pro * Doc “Interferences of Religion with Politics and Economy as Reflected in Their Construction Stories”, Univ. Basel, Zurich , Lucerne . After receiving his doctorate in October 2011 as Dr. phil. at the University of Basel he was a post-doctoral student in religious studies in Basel from 2011 to 2012 (scholarship from the research fund of the University of Basel). From 2012 to 2013 he was a post-doctoral scholarship from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation for the project “Transcontinental Networking and Religious Globalization in the Journalism of Filipino Indigenous-Christian Elites around 1900” in Munich . From 2013 to 2014 he was a research assistant at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in the DFG project “Indigenous Christian elites of Asia and Africa around 1900 as reflected in their journals and periodicals” (head: Klaus Koschorke ). From 2014 to 2015 he had a post-doctoral fellowship from the SNSF for prospective researchers, research stay at Utrecht University and Stanford University . From 2014 to 2019 he was a member of the “Young ZiF” network of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research . From 2015 to 2017 he taught as a junior professor (W1) for missions, ecumenical studies and religious studies at the University of Hamburg . Since 2017 he has been Professor (W3) for Religion and Society at the Forum for International Science at the University of Bonn . From April to September 2019 he was a Senior Fellow at the research group "Multiple Secularities" at the University of Leipzig .

His research interests are theoretical conceptualization and historical genealogy of a global religious discourse and the question of the "distinctions of religion", global history of interweaving of worldwide Christianity with a special focus on the history of Christianity in the Philippines around 1900, religious modernisms in Asia and Europe around 1900 and Significance of documentary media, especially documentary films, for the theory of religion and modern religious history.
