Adrian Severin (born March 28, 1954 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian politician ( PSD ) and former member of the European Parliament .

Life

Severin was Foreign Minister of Romania from December 12, 1996 to December 29, 1997. In the course of Romania's admission to the European Union , he has been a member of the European Parliament since January 1, 2007 , where he was a member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats in the European Parliament .

After the European elections in 2009 , in which Severin was re-elected, he was next to Massimo D'Alema as a promising candidate for the office of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy . In November 2009, however, Catherine Ashton was nominated for this office.

In March 2011 the British Sunday Times published an article on the Cash-for-Laws affair . From 2010 onwards, journalists disguised as lobbyists for the newspaper had offered several MEPs large sums of money if they wanted to influence legislation in the European Parliament. Three parliamentarians responded, in addition to Severin, Ernst Strasser (Austria, ÖVP ) and Zoran Thaler (Slovenia, SD ). Severin submitted a change request ordered by the alleged lobbyists and requested the transfer of the agreed 12,000 euros. After the reporters had revealed their true identity, Severin asserted that he had "done nothing illegal". On March 22nd, he was expelled from the social democratic group Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament , from whose side he was also called on to resign as a member of parliament. While Strasser on 20 and Thaler her on March 21 mandate laid down their Severin rejected a resignation. On March 23, 2011, the European Anti-Fraud Office initiated an accelerated procedure against Severin and the other two parliamentarians. In February 2016 Severin was sentenced to 3 years and 3 months in prison for corruption offenses in Romania. He described the judgment as monstrous and announced an appeal. In November 2016 Severin was sentenced to four years in prison.
