Adrien Dax (* 1913 in Toulouse , Haute-Garonne department ; † August 29, 1979 ibid) was a French author and painter of surrealism .

Live and act

Dax came from a very humble background. His father, a laborer, died from the after-effects of his injuries from the First World War .

Thanks to a scholarship, Dax was able to attend evening courses at the École des Beaux-Arts (EBA) in his hometown. Politically interested, he was first close to the Mouvement des Jeunes Socialistes , but then joined the Mouvement Jeunes Communistes de France . For a short time he acted as secretary in his regional association, but after a short time he was expelled from the movement because art and politics seemed incompatible.

At the EBA he got to know the new magazine Minotaure founded by Albert Skira in 1933 and thus also got to know the first surrealist artists. During this time Dax began to publish his first articles and essays.

In 1936 Dax joined some friends and went to Spain. He fought there in the civil war until 1939 and was taken prisoner of war in 1939 , which he spent in the German Reich .

He experienced the end of the war in his hometown and in 1947 Dax went to Paris , because he hoped for better opportunities there as an artist. Through his friendship with André Breton he was able to make further contacts, including a. Through this he got to know some gallery owners with whom he was later able to exhibit.

Still politically active, Dax was one of the signatories of the 121st manifesto on September 5, 1960 .

Adrien Dax died on August 29, 1979 in Toulouse, where he found his final resting place.
