Aedesius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aedesius or Aidesios († 306 in Alexandria ) was a pupil of Pamphilus of Caesarea and a martyr during the Diocletian persecution of Christians . He is venerated as a saint .

Life

According to Eusebius , who reports on him in his book On the Martyrs in Palestine , Aedesius came from Lycia and was the brother of Apphianus , who was martyred in Caesarea Maritima in 306 . Aedesius had indefinitely been sentenced to forced labor in the mines of Palestine and went to Alexandria after his release. There he went against the Praefectus Aegypti , Sossianus Hierocles . This well-known persecutor of Christians had handed over Christian women to brothel owners and mistreated male Christians. Aedesius attacked Hierocles not only with words, but also physically. He was then arrested, sentenced to death by drowning, and thrown into the sea.

His feast day in the Roman Catholic Church is April 8th.
