Apphianus

Apphianus (* in the 3rd century in Gagai ; † 306 in Caesarea Maritima ) was a young student of Pamphilus of Caesarea and a martyr during the Diocletian persecution of Christians . He is venerated as a saint .

Life

According to his classmate Eusebius , who reports on him in his book On the Martyrs in Palestine , Apphianus came from Gagai in Lycia . Apphianus was condemned after he had disturbed the governor of Maximinus Daia , Urbanus, during a libation - “ when nobody suspected it, he hid it from us who lived in the same house .” The governor had Apphianus beaten and tortured. After three days he was thrown into the sea and drowned. Apphianus had a brother named Aedesius , who also died a martyr.

His feast day in the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches is April 2nd.
