Aenima is a Portuguese band from Almada . Her musical style is inspired by early ethereal bands such as Cocteau Twins , Dead Can Dance or Faith and the Muse . The melancholy, dreamy mood of the music, which is influenced by the shoegazing movement, is also characteristic. The band name is derived from anima , the Latin word for ' soul '.

history

Aenima was founded in 1997 by guitarist Rune (formerly Millennium ) and singer Carmen Simões (formerly Poetry of Shadows and Isiphilon ) shortly after both of them left their previous bands. They recorded their debut album Revolutions in Rune's own recording studio without any other band members . It was released in 1999 by the Portuguese independent label Symbiose , with whom the band signed a two-album record deal . However, shortly thereafter, the label stopped any promotion and limited itself to selling the album. Without the necessary sales promotion , sales remained very low.

After a few appearances at Portuguese dark wave festivals with a permanent cast, the band got the opportunity to perform at the German M'era Luna Festival in 2000 , which made them known abroad for the first time. Then from January to June 2001 the recordings for the six-track EP Never Fragile took place, which was temporarily released in January 2002 on the Portuguese label Equilibrium Music and received good to very good reviews.

The second album Sentient , recorded in September 2001, was released in May 2003 on the US label Middle Pillar Presents . For the release of the album, the band organized an exclusive multimedia show in the planetarium of the Museu da Marinha in Lisbon . The following year the limited Picture Disc Puppet Circus was released . At the same time, singer Carmen left the band and shortly afterwards founded the doom metal band Ava Inferi together with the Norwegian musician Rune Eriksen . Since 2005 the band has been performing with the new singer Susana. Apart from a few live appearances, the band has been inactive since 2007.
