The Aeropuerto Internacional de Carrasco ( IATA : MVD ; ICAO : SUMU ) is the international airport near Montevideo , the capital of Uruguay . It is the largest and most important airport in the country and served as the home base of PLUNA .

It was built in 1947 and is located in the Canelones department in the town of the same name a few kilometers east of Montevideo . The new terminal designed by Rafael Viñoly was inaugurated on October 5th, 2009 . It has four passenger boarding bridges and, according to information from the Barrisol company involved in the construction, can handle up to four and a half million passengers a year. The actual number of passengers, on the other hand, has fluctuated around the million mark in each of the past years. In an airport ranking by the US travel portal frommer's in January 2012, Montevideo Airport found a place in the TOP 10 best airports in the world. There he finished ninth.

Airlines and Destinations

Montevideo is connected to numerous destinations within South America , including Buenos Aires , Panama City and Lima . American Airlines has flights to Miami . By Iberia Airport (as of 2012) was the only European to destination, the Spanish capital Madrid , tethered. On November 26, 2012, Iberia announced that it would initially partially cancel the direct flight connection at the beginning of 2013, despite 86% utilization of the route, and then completely discontinue it from April 2013. Iberia announced in April 2014 that it would restart the Montevideo - Madrid connection four times a week from September 2014.
