It used to be called the "Blauer Affentaler" and has nothing to do with the Affenthaler grape variety .

Wines from the Baden-Baden winegrowers' cooperative are also known as Affentaler and are offered for sale in monkey bottles.

history

In 1250 planted Cistercian the monastery Lichtenthal in Baden-Baden Pinot Noir vines at. In the vicinity of the vineyard there was a pilgrimage chapel visited by numerous pilgrims. Based on the " Ave Maria ", the area where the bells could be heard was popularly called "Ave Valley". From this the current name Affental developed. Today is Location Affental in Buhl incorporated.

Karl Müller reported in his Weinbau-Lexikon, published by Paul Parey Verlag in 1930, that Affental gave its name to the wines growing in the area (between Bühlertal and Neuweier ). The red wines of the region were mostly from the vines of Pinot Noir and the Blue Arbst pressed. Before the phylloxera crisis, however, there was hardly any interest in correctly identifying grape varieties, so no separately cultivated varieties were found in the vineyards; the mixed sentence prevailed .

White wines were also marketed under the name Affentaler (or Affenthaler).

It was only when the winegrowers' cooperative was founded that Affental wine became known to a broader audience and subsequently expanded into a brand name.

Grape variety

Affentaler is now made from the Pinot Noir (rosé and red) and Riesling grape varieties . In earlier years, the Pinot Noir mutation Blauer Arbst was traditionally used for this purpose. In the Baden-Baden winegrowers' cooperative, only Spätburgunder red wine is called Affentaler.

various
