Another 40% are in the direction of specialist retailers, the remaining 30% are divided between the catering and direct sales sectors .

There is great national and international interest, especially in the "monkey bottle". Exports are mainly to the USA and Asia . Affentaler Winzer eG's export share is 4%. Since 2004 was the year of the monkey according to the Chinese horoscope , the demand increased exponentially, especially in Asia.

history

As early as 1250, the Cistercian women of the Lichtenthal monastery near Baden-Baden were planting Pinot Noir vines. In the vicinity of the vineyard there was a pilgrimage chapel visited by numerous pilgrims. Based on the Ave Maria , the valley was popularly called the Ave Valley . From this the current name Affental developed.

In 1908, 24 winegrowers joined together to form the Affental natural winegrowing association . At that time only Pinot Noir was grown, which was marketed exclusively to the catering trade . The Affental natural winegrowing association was the only cooperative in Germany that focused on the cultivation of red wine.

In 1937, Riesling winemakers founded a white wine cooperative in the neighboring village of Eisental, Affental . The construction of a cellar building began in the center of the village.

In 1949 the Affentaler Pinot Noir was bottled in the monkey bottle for the first time. The shape of the bottle was designed by a pharmacist from Karlsruhe. In the same year, the Altschweier wine cooperative was founded in what is now the Altschweier district of Bühl .

The nature Weinbauverein Affental joined in 1959 with the wine cooperative Eisental for winegrowers Eisental-Affental together. Step by step, the winery in the center of Eisental was expanded in order to be able to capture the increasing area under vines. One year later , the Altschweier and Kappelwindeck wine cooperatives merged to form the Altschweier-Kappelwindeck wine cooperative . On September 1, 1973, the two remaining cooperatives merged to form the Affentaler Winzergenossenschaft .

In July 2018, the members of the Baden-Badener Winzergenossenschaft and the Affentaler Winzer decided to merge the two companies. The new cooperative is called Affentaler Winzer eG.

Growing area

The vineyards of the Affentaler Winzergenossenschaft stretches from the Upper Rhine Plain over the hills of the foothills to the steep Black Forest massif . The vines stand up to a height of 250 m above sea level. Only 10 km further east the mountains are already 1000 m high. Due to this special geographical location on the steepest ascent of the northern Black Forest, the Affentaler vines are very well protected against cold east winds. The Upper Rhine Valley is blessed with enough hours of sunshine in summer. In addition, the neighboring steep mountains ensure sufficient rainfall due to incline rain from the west. An adequate water supply is of great importance for the quality of the wine, especially in hot and dry summers.

Granite weathered soil is predominantly found on the steep slopes of the Black Forest . This is an excellent heat store. It absorbs the first rays of spring sun very quickly and allows the buds of the vines to sprout early.

The steep vineyards along the Black Forest slope to the west and south. This means that the sun can be used particularly well during the ripening phase in September and October. Autumn fog is rare, so Pinot Noir and Riesling can mature for a particularly long time.

In the foothills you will find fertile loess soils that provide the vines with sufficient water and nutrients throughout the entire vegetation period . These are the best conditions for strong wines with a pronounced fruit aroma.
