Afonso Reis Cabral
Afonso Reis Cabral (* 1990 in Lisbon , Portugal ) is a Portuguese writer who is best known as a poet and novelist and is considered one of the most promising writers of his generation in Portugal. In 2019 he was awarded the Prémio José Saramago .
Live and act
Reis Cabral was born in Lisbon but grew up in Porto . He is the fifth of six sons. He is one of the great-great-grandchildren of the writer José Maria Eça de Queiroz .
At the age of thirteen he traveled with his parents to Germany , later, as a young adult at the age of 25, he traveled alone in a truck in search of stories.
He wrote his first poem at the age of nine on the death of the fado singer Amalia Rodrigues . At the age of fifteen he published his first book, a volume of poetry. The volume includes more than two hundred poems. As a child he was fascinated by the verses of Luís de Camões , Alexandre O'Neill , David Mourão-Ferreira and Pedro Homem de Mello , which were conveyed to him through the music of Amalia Rodrigues. Later publications in various anthologies and magazines followed.
He began studying Portuguese Philology and Lusophony as well as Fictional Writing at the Universidade Nova in Lisbon, where he also completed his Masters and PhD in Philology . His student jobs included jobs in a dairy, travel agency and bookstore.
In 2014 his first novel O Meu Irmão was published , which was also translated into Spanish and Italian and was also published in Brazil .
His second novel, Pão de Açúcar , a biographical novel, was published in 2018 and tells the true story of the murder of the transsexual Gisberta Salce Junior, who was killed by three young people in a Catholic institution in 2006, which caused horror across the country.
In 2019 the book Leva-me contigo was published , which describes his travel experiences and hikes from April to June 2019 over more than 768 kilometers through Portugal. He started in Vila Real in the north of the country and ended in Faro in the Algarve and wrote mainly about the encounters with people on this route.
Today he works primarily as a freelance writer.
