Afonso da Costa Rangel (born April 30, 1935 in Bibileo , Viqueque , Portuguese Timor ; † February 28, 2020 in Dili , East Timor ), fighting name Tatamou , was an East Timorese freedom fighter .

Career

In the resistance fight against the Indonesian invaders he was deputy commissioner and in the time of the resistance bases he was responsible for the defensive battle in Viqueque. After the area was occupied in 1979, Rangel organized the further resistance of the Milícia Popular de Libertaçao Nacional (MIPLIN). After being captured by the Indonesians, Rangel was exiled on the island of Atauro from 1982 to 1985 . He was tortured by the Indonesian military in Comarca prison . Under the leadership of David Alex , Rangel united former political prisoners to continue the resistance in Dili . The Orgão 8 group supplied the resistance fighters with food and in 1987 made contacts overseas. From July 16 to November 12, 1991 he hid Xanana Gusmão , the commander of the FALINTIL , from the occupiers in a hole in the ground in Dili's district of Fatumeta .

On November 28, 2016, Rangel was awarded the Medal des Ordem de Timor-Leste .
