Afrânio Antônio da Costa (born March 14, 1892 in Rio de Janeiro , † June 26, 1979 ibid) was a Brazilian sports shooter .

Career

Afrânio da Costa participated in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp , where he served as the flag bearer of the Brazilian delegation during the opening ceremony, in two disciplines. With the free pistol he took second place in the individual competition over 50 m with 489 points behind Karl Frederick , who had scored 496 points, and thus secured the silver medal. He was the first medalist in the Olympic history of Brazil. In the team competition he won the bronze medal with Dario Barbosa , Guilherme Parãense , Fernando Soledade and Sebastião Wolf with 2264 points behind the US and Swedish teams. At the national level he won numerous titles.

Da Costa was a lawyer and a judge at both the Federal Tribunal de Recursos and the Supremo Tribunal Federal . He was co-founder and later also president of the Brazilian Shooting Association and also active in the soccer field . He was temporarily president of Fluminense Rio de Janeiro . At the Football World Cup in 1930 he led the Brazilian delegation.
