Against Wind and Tide: A Cuban Odyssey is an American documentary directed by Jim Burroughs from 1981.

action

The film deals with the Mariel boat crisis in which around 125,000 people fled the state of Cuba to Florida . Archive recordings from Cuba as well as original recordings of the refugee ships and interviews with refugees will be shown. It also shows the attempt to get from Burroughs to Cuba to take pictures in the ports of Cuba, which initially fails because of the ship's captain. A second trip was successful and original recordings were made at the port of Mariel .

Back in Florida, Burroughs manages to get on one of the refugee boats, where some refugees could be interviewed. The positive thoughts of the refugees contrast with the reactions of US President Jimmy Carter , who regrets his open door policy and is setting up camps to deal with the flow of refugees. The camps get crowded quickly. Press reports speak of "homosexuals" and "criminals". The film introduces some refugees, including a young woman who wants to join her family in California. Some tragic fates are also presented, such as a teacher and a medical student, who both cannot find sponsors to vouch for them and who are therefore deported. American racists are also shown.

The film belongs to the "World Series" of Public Broadcasting Service and was first broadcast on June 1, 1981.
