Mariel is a city and a municipality in the Cuban province of Artemisa . Until 2010 the municipality was part of the dissolved province of La Habana .

Mariel is located about 40 kilometers west of the Cuban capital Havana on the southeast side of Mariel Bay. On the eastern side of the bay there is a sea port , a cement plant and a power plant . On the western side there was a submarine base, today a special economic zone . 44,597 people live in the municipality on an area of 270.6 km², which corresponds to a population density of 164.8 inhabitants per km².

Mariel has the Cuban port that is closest to the United States . In 1980 around 125,000 Cubans fled to the USA from this port. Many of them reached their destination, but some lost their lives in the sea. This event, known as the Mariel Boat Crisis, can be found in the opening scene of Brian De Palma's feature film Scarface .

Ernest Hemingway's granddaughter Mariel is said to have been named after this place.

Expansion of the port of Mariel

The port of Mariel is being expanded to become the largest container port in the Caribbean. The construction was carried out through a joint venture with the Brazilian company Odebrecht and the Cuban company Almacenes Universal SA The total investment amounts to 600 million US dollars. The port entrance was 700 meters wide, which allows two large container ships to be accommodated at the same time. The port is accessible to ships with a draft of up to 15 meters . (In comparison: the port of Havana only allows a draft of 11 meters). At the end of the expansion work, the terminal should be able to manage a capacity of 850,000 to one million TEU (Havana port: 350,000 TEU). This expansion should enable Mariel to receive large container ships from Asia via the Pacific Ocean and the Panama Canal to Cuba. Mariel should also offer optimal conditions for US containers. Mariel is supposed to relieve the port of Havana from freight tasks, as it will only be used for tourism in the future.

The container terminal opened in January 2014 with an annual capacity of 824,000 TEU and handled 57 ships with a size of up to 15,000 TEU in the first half of the operating year. In 2014, 211,000 TEU were handled in the Mariel container terminal, and 315,000 TEU were expected for 2015.

At the end of 2013 a 465 km² industrial and logistics zone ( special economic zone ) was created at the port, for which there were few commitments from interested companies until the beginning of 2016. Too much bureaucracy and too many requirements should be the reason for this.
