Guanajay is a city and a municipality in the Cuban province of Artemisa . Until 2010 the municipality was part of the dissolved province of La Habana .

The city is west of Caimito and east of Mariel . The settlement was officially founded in 1781.

The municipality has 28,429 inhabitants on an area of ​​113 km², which corresponds to a population density of 251.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The area is dominated by agriculture, sugar cane and tobacco are grown.

The municipality is divided into seven districts ( Barrio ): Cabriales, Chacón, Jobo, Norte, San José, Santa Ana and Sur. The municipality belonged to the province of Pinar del Río until after the Cuban revolution .
