Alquízar is a city and a municipality in the Cuban province of Artemisa . Until December 31, 2010 it was part of what was then the province of La Habana .
The city is located southwest of San Antonio de los Baños and west of Güira de Melena . The settlement was first mentioned in 1616 when a coffee plantation was established. A garrison was stationed in 1826, and in 1879 the current settlement was officially founded.
The municipality has 29,616 inhabitants on an area of 205 km², which corresponds to a population density of 144.5 inhabitants per square kilometer.
The municipality is divided into five districts ( barrio ): Guanímar, La Paz, Pueblo, San Andrés and Tumbadero.
