Güira de Melena is a city and a municipality in the Cuban province of Artemisa . Until 2010 the municipality was part of the dissolved province of La Habana .
The city is located southwest of San Antonio de los Baños and east of Alquízar . The settlement was officially established in 1779.
The municipality has 37,838 inhabitants on an area of 178 km², which corresponds to a population density of 212.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The area is dominated by agriculture, sugar cane, pineapples, bananas, potatoes and tobacco are grown. There are also cigar factories in the city.
The municipality is divided into six districts ( barrios ): Gabriel, Norte Pueblo, Sibanacán, Sur Pueblo, Tumbadero and Turibacoa.
