Josef Fanta

Josef Fanta (born December 7, 1856 in Sudoměřice , † June 20, 1954 in Prague ) was a Czech architect.

After studying architecture, Fanta became the assistant to his professor Josef Zítek in the construction of the National Theater . Fanta taught from 1909 to 1922 as a professor at the Technical University of Prague . In 1918 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Czechoslovakia. Fanta, along with Gabriela Preissová, was one of the first Prague residents to purchase weekend properties in Jevany and to establish the village's reputation as a weekend settlement for the Prague high society.

He is the father of the journalist and translator Marie Fantová .

The most important works of the architect include the Prague main train station , the burial mound on Pratzeberg for the Battle of Austerlitz , the building of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Prague and the Ondřejov observatory . He also carried out reconstructions, for example on the church of St. Wenceslas on Zderaz . The coffee house in Prague's main train station bears his name (Fantova Kavárna) .
