Agathon Léonard

Agathon Léonard or Agathon Léonard van der Weydeveld or Agathon van Weydeveldt (born August 28, 1841 in Lille , † November 12, 1923 in Paris ) is a sculptor of Belgian descent who took on French citizenship.

Life

Léonard began his studies at the Académie des beaux-arts de Lille and continued them at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris . One of his teachers in Paris was Eugène Delaplanche . He settled in Paris after attending the Salon in 1868 . The artist became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1887 and exhibited regularly at the society's salon. In 1889 he won a silver medal at the Paris World's Fair in 1889 . In 1897 Léonard became a member of the Société nationale des beaux-arts . He received it at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900a gold medal. He exhibited widely across France and was honored with the title Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1900 .

Art Nouveau

The Art Nouveau style, known in Central Europe as Art Nouveau , was Léonard's stylistic orientation, regardless of whether he created bronze statues, figures made of porcelain , biscuit porcelain or earthenware . Only depictions of women are known of Léonard, which he also executed in marble, ivory and quartz.

The bronze foundry Fonderie Susse , which still exists today (2013) south of Paris in Malakoff , Département Hauts-de-Seine , worked for Léonard, among others. For his characters with the theme Playing with the Scarf , he was inspired by the American artist and dancer Loïe Fuller .
