The UC Men's Octet , also Cal Men's Octet or UC Berkeley Men's Octet , is an eight -member a cappella group from the University of California, Berkeley .

Founded in 1948, the group spanning a wide repertoire of many styles of music including barbershop , doo-wop , pop and alternative, and Berkeley fight songs. The octet has recorded over a dozen albums and has won the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) multiple times, winning the competition in 1998 and 2000.

While the octet plays regularly in the San Francisco Bay Area for both alumni and the public, the group has also toured around the world including China, Australia, Europe and many locations in the United States. The group also performs at Berkeley's "Sproul Plaza" at 1:00 am every Wednesday during the academic year.

The group hosts a number of annual concerts. In the fall there is the "West Coast A Cappella Showcase", in which several groups from all over the country are invited to perform in Berkeley. Guest groups at these concerts included former ICCA winners such as Brigham Young University's Noteworthy and Vocal Point, as well as groups from Stanford , UCLA, USC , Mt. San Antonio College , and the University of Oregon .

YouTube

The octet has gained wider popularity over the years through video contributions of their various performances on stage. The octet's most popular line-up was arguably between 2002 and 2003, with popular pieces like “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Not Pretty Enough”, “Stayin 'Alive”, “Big Butts”, “Shout”, “Blackbird”, and the like "Nirvana Medley". “Bohemian Rhapsody” has already been viewed over 2,000,000 times on YouTube. The 2004–2005 octet with the “Lion King Medley” and the 2008–2009 octet with “Men in Tights” are also fan favorites. The group members make all the musical arrangements themselves, and although there have been many requests for the arrangements, especially for Bohemian Rhapsody, the group has not released their arrangements to the public out of respect for the arranger and the group as a whole.

The octet in the media

Over the years, the male octet has appeared in several California Bay Area publications such as The Daily Review, the San Jose Mercury News, and the Contra Costa Times. The group made several appearances in other media, from annual appearances on KFOG (San Francisco / San Jose) radio station to WCAU News in Philadelphia , the men's octet was heard nationwide.

The octet recorded a public health announcement with the California Department of Health Services titled "Wash Your Hands" as part of the "Immunization Branch's" campaign against the flu and ran a radio commercial for Coor beer to promote "The Pigskin Can ”.
