Agave avellanidens is a species ofthe agave genus ( agave ). An English common name is "Century Plant".

description

Agave avellanidens forms a short trunk up to 0.5 m in height. The individual rosettes reach heights of 60 to 120 cm with a diameter of 100 to 150 cm. The variable, fleshy, linear to lanceolate, smooth, green leaves are 40 to 70 cm long and 9 to 14 cm wide. The wavy, sometimes horny leaf margins are serrated flexibly. The brown to gray strong terminal mandrel is 2.5 to 4.5 cm long.

The panicle inflorescence becomes 4 to 6 m high. The small, slender, light yellow flowers are 25 to 35 mm long and appear from the middle of the inflorescence and reach the tip of narrow, irregularly arranged branches. The flower tube is 4 to 6 mm long.

The dark brown, elongated three-chambered capsule fruits are up to 35 mm long and up to 20 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from April to May.

Systematics and distribution

Agave avellanidens grows in Mexico in the state of Baja California . It is associated with succulent and cactus species.

The first description by Trel. was published in 1911 (1912 publ.).

Agave avellanidens is a representative of the Deserticolae group . Few colonies grow in a limited area in central Baja California. It is closely related to Agave gigantensis , but there are differences in shape and leaf structure. The species resembles Agave shawii of the Umbelliflorae group , but differs significantly in the flowers.
