Charts and reception
Agents of Fortune was the first Blue Öyster Cult album to make it into the top 30 in the USA. In the United Kingdom, it was ranked 26th for the first time ever. The released single (Don't Fear) The Reaper rose to number 12 in the US and to number 16. In Canada, the album reached number 28 on the charts while the single (Don't Fear) The Reaper rose to number 7 rose. In Sweden the album rose to number ten and stayed in the charts for four weeks.
Ken Tucker from Rolling Stone described the album as surprisingly successful, because you don't expect Blue Öyster Cult to sound like this: loud, crazy and melodic, but at the same time calm, confident and rocky. He identified Patti Smith's involvement in the songs Debbie Denise and The Revenge of Vera Gemini as a central and positive influence . Thom Jurek from Allmusic gave Agents of Fortune 4.5 out of 5 stars. It is a solid and coherent album, but fans of the previous sound should find it frightening.
